Nokia at its recent press conference announced the arrival of the Nokia Lumia 920, a leading smartphone featuring Windows Phone 8. The Lumia 920 in fact could be the vital phone for the survival of the company. However, the phone has some amazing specs and some of them are comparable to that of the greatest phones in the market such as the Samsung Galaxy S III. Here is a comparison between the two phones.
The Samsung Galaxy S III measures 136.6 mm lengthwise, 70.6 mm breadth wise and 8.6 mm thick. The phone weighs 133 g. The Lumia 920 measures 130.3 mm in length, 70.8 mm in breadth and 10.7 mm in thickness. It weighs 185 g. The S III features an amazingly bright and clear Super AMOLED touch screen with a resolution of 720 * 1280 pixels spread over its 4.8 inch panel. The S III’s AMOLED display removes all previous faults as the harshness of colours. The Lumia 920 sports an IPS TFT capacitive display of 4.5 inches and a high resolution of 768 * 1280 pixels. The display is vivid and the Nokia’s PureMotion HD Plus technology that has been incorporated in the phone makes it better than HD. However, it has been found that the screen is just like HD in reality except that it sparkles when viewing media.
The S III runs on Android v4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, Upgradable to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean) while the Lumia 920 is a Windows phone running Microsoft Windows phone 8. The S III is powered by a quad core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz and packed with an Exynos 4412 quad chipset. The Lumia 920 is driven by a dual core Krait processor with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and with a clock speed of 1.5 GHz.
The S III comes in three different models containing 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB of internal memory each available with 1 GB RAM. The Lumia 920 has 32 GB of internal storage with 1 GB RAM. The S III has a micro SD slot that can house up to 32 GB. The Lumia 920 does not have a micro SD slot.
The phones have 8 MP camera units in the rear with features as LED flash, geo tagging, touch focus, etc. The Lumia 920 camera uses Carl Zeiss optics and the Pureview technology. The S III on the other hand can shoot images and HD video simultaneously. The phone cameras can shoot videos with a quality of 1080p and a frame rate of 30 fps. The S III has a 1.9 MP front camera that can shoot 720p video. The Lumia 920 sports a 1.3 MP secondary camera.
The phones have 2G, 3G and 4G networks via GSM, HSDPA and LTE connectivity respectively. EDGE and GPRS are supported in the two phones. The wireless networking in the phones is enabled via Wi-Fi 802.11, Wi-Fi Direct, etc. The local area connection is via Bluetooth, NFC and micro USB v2.0.
The S III has a Li-Ion battery rated at 2100 mAh. The Lumia 920 is fuelled by a Li-Ion battery rated at 2000 mAh.
The expected price Lumia 920’s is around $750. The S III is priced around $675.
The Nokia Lumia 920 is undoubtedly a great handset but it is based a lot on its previous models. It doesn’t bring in anything new and there is nothing to be wowed at unlike the S III. The Lumia 920 isn’t much of a match to the Samsung Galaxy S III.
