Specs Comparison: Apple iPhone 5 vs. Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD

Apple’s sixth iPhone has been revealed. Its iteration namely the iPhone 5 as expected features a larger screen, a faster processor and a slightly improved camera.However, the Apple iPhone 5 is  not the only phone announced this month. The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD was announced earlier this month and is expected to release soon. So, will the iPhone 5 give the Razr Maxx HD a run for its money? Here is a comparison between the two phones.

Ergonomics & Design:

The iPhone 5 is 123.8 mm lengthwise, 58.6 mm breadthwise and merely 7.6 mm thick. The phone weighs 112 g only. The Razr Maxx HD measures 131.9 mm lengthwise, 67.9 mm breadthwise and 9.3 mm thick. The phone weighs 157 g.The iPhone 5 has a LED backlit display of 4 inches with a resolution of 640 * 1136 pixels. Apple has retained the Retina display feature in the new iPhone screen. The Razr Maxx HD sports a Super AMOLED display of 4.7 inches with a resolution of 720 * 1280 pixels. Super AMOLED displays have superb black response and vivid colors but the IPS screens used in the iPhone tend to look more natural. The design of the iPhone 5 is exquisite and has a premium feel thanks to the aluminum back plate.

OS:

The Apple iPhone 5 is equipped with iOS 6. There are some tweaks in the iOS such as the improved Siri feature. There has been some noticeable effort to take the overhyped and under-featured personal assistant to a more useful level. The Razr Maxx HD runs on Android v4.0.4 (now upgradable to v4.1). The iPhone 5 is driven by the brand new Apple A6 chipset processor. Other details of the CPU haven’t been revealed yet.The Razr Maxx HD is driven by a dual core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz.

Memory:

The iPhone 5 comes in three models based on internal storage – 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB with 1 GB RAM. Sadly, the iPhone 5 doesn’t have a micro SD slot. The Razr Maxx HD has 32 GB of internal space and 1 GB RAM. It also has a micro SD slot that can house up to 32 GB of extra memory.

Camera:

The camera in the iPhone 5 has only been slightly upgraded. It has an 8 MP shooter in the rear using a pretty standard LED flash. It can shoot 1080p video.The iPhone 5 has a 1.2 MP front facing camera that can also shoot 720p video. The Razr Maxx HD has an 8 MP unit in the rear too with features as LED flash, geo tagging, touch focus, 1080p video, etc. It features a 1.3 MP secondary camera.

Connectivity:

The iPhone 5 like its predecessor has a dual antenna system. Apple has included 4G LTE connectivity in the phone. The new features in the iPhone 5 include the use of an 8 pin connector over the 30 pin connector that was used earlier.The Razr Maxx HD is a CDMA phone. It also has LTE connectivity enabled via LTE.

Battery Life:

The iPhone 5’s Li-Po battery offers about 8 hours of talk time. The Li-Ion battery in the Razr Maxx HD is rated at 3300 mAh.

Price:

According to Apple’s website, the 16GB model starts at $649, with the 32GB version costing $749, and the 64GB top-tier configuration running $849. The price of the Razr Maxx HD is not known yet.

Wrap Up:

The Razr Maxx HD is undoubtedly a good phone with some great specs. However, the iPhone 5 has classy design & premium status. There is tough competition between the two and its hard for us to decide the obvious winner.
