Specs Comparison: Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The Apple iPhone 5 is finally a reality. While its specs are topnotch and premium it isn’t the only worthwhile smartphone in the market now. However, it is going to face some really tough competition in the smartphone market especially from companies like Samsung. One of Google’s best smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, is one of the competitors. Here is a comparison between the two phones.

Ergonomics & Design:

The Korean Giant has designed the Galaxy Nexus well. It has a length of 135.5 mm, width of 67.9 mm and a thickness of 8.9 mm. It weighs 135 g. The iPhone 5 is 123.8 mm lengthwise, 58.6 mm breadthwise and merely 7.6 mm thick. The phone weighs 112 g only. The Nexus features a Super AMOLED touchscreen of 4.65 inch, a resolution of 720 * 1280 pixels and a sharpness of 312 ppi. The iPhone 5 has a LED backlit display of 4 inches with a resolution of 640 * 1136 pixels. Apple has retained the Retina display feature in the new iPhone screen. The design of the iPhone 5 is exquisite and has a premium feel thanks to the aluminum back plate.


The Apple iPhone 5 is equipped with iOS 6 while the Galaxy Nexus runs on Android 4.0.4, now upgradable to v4.1. There are some tweaks in the iOS such as the improved Siri feature. There has been some noticeable effort to take the overhyped and under-featured personal assistant to a more useful level. The iPhone 5 is driven by the brand new Apple A6 chipset processor. Other details of the CPU haven’t been revealed yet. The Nexus is driven by a dual core Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 chipset processor clocked at 1.2 GHz.


The iPhone 5 comes in three models based on internal storage – 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB with 1 GB RAM. The Nexus however, has only 16 GB internal space and 1 GB RAM. The phones do not have micro SD slots.


The Nexus possesses only a 5 MP shooter in the rear with features as LED flash, geo tagging, etc. The iPhone 5 has a 1.2 MP front facing camera that can also shoot 720p video. The secondary camera in the Nexus consists of a 1.3 MP front camera and 720p video.


The iPhone 5 like its predecessor has a dual antenna system. Apple has included 4G LTE connectivity in the phone. Wireless connectivity options are Wi-Fi 802.11, Wi-Fi hotspot, etc. Bluetooth is present in both phones. Local area connectivity is enabled via Bluetooth. The Nexus has a NFC chip.

Battery Life:

The iPhone 5’s Li-Po battery offers about 8 hours of talk time. The Galaxy Nexus is powered by Li-Ion battery rated at 1750 mAh.


According to Apple’s website, the 16GB model starts at $649, with the 32GB version costing $749, and the 64GB top-tier configuration running $849. The Nexus is available at $ 550.

The Nexus is an amazing phone. It has a big display, fast processor, high resolution screen, etc. In most aspects Nexus easily beats the Apple iPhone 5 which has an elegant design and premium feel.
