Microsoft unveiled its latest hardware lately – the first Microsoft designed tablet computer, the Surface. It has not only released one but two tablets – the Surface for Windows RT and that for Windows 8 Pro. This has led to tablet wars – one of the prominent ones being that between the surface and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Both Microsoft and Samsung are considered underdogs in the industry compared to topnotch companies like Apple as they don’t have an effective market for their tablets. So, in today’s article, we are comparing the flagship tablet of the companies and figuring out which can do better.
Ergonomics & Design:
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 measures 256.6 mm lengthwise, 175.3 mm breadthwise and 9.7 mm in thickness. It weighs around 588 g. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has changed the design that was sported by its predecessor so as to avoid legal battles with Apple. The Galaxy Tab has round edges and the while device features a grey/silver bezel round the outside. The Surface is 9.4 mm thick; the other dimensions are yet to be announced. The Surface on the other hand, is stylish and unique. In fact Microsoft has adopted a design style that no other competitor sports. The tablet is made of magnesium liquid metal and also sports a 3 mm thick Touch Cover which acts as a smart cover protector and a multi touch keyboard. The 10.1 inch display of the Galaxy Tab 2 has a resolution of 1280 * 800 pixels. The Surface tablet has a 10.6 inch touchscreen with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
The tablets are powered by different operating systems. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is powered by Android v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Samsung has added its own Touchwiz UX to ICS. The Surface RT on the other hand comes with Windows 8 which includes Metro UI. This enables users to use the same software that one uses on a desktop. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is backed with a dual core 1 GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor. Samsung is yet to release the quad core processor version of the tablet. The two variants of the Surface are equipped with different processors. The RT is a special version with ARM chipset while the Surface Pro runs Intel Mobile processor with Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset.

Microsoft has remained mum on the cameras in the Surface tablets. A front camera might be present for video conferences. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 features a 3.15 MP rear camera that can also record 1080p HD video. It also sports a front camera of moderate quality for video chats.
The Surface RT is only Wi-Fi enabled while the Surface Pro has additional 3G and 4G (LTE) connections. The Tab is Wi-Fi enabled too and has 3G and 4G network connections as well. Local area connectivity is enabled via USB 2.0.
We aren’t sure about the battery details of the Microsoft Surface. The Tab is fuelled by a 7000 mAh Li-Ion battery.
The Surface is rumored to be priced at $599 while the Tab is priced around $590.
Microsoft Surface possesses uniqueness and style that is not featured by any other tablet competitor. Though the tablets equal each other in some specs, the Surface will likely emerge as the winner.
