Specs Comparison: Motorola Atrix HD vs. Samsung Galaxy S3

Motorola has released another Atrix phone this time being the Atrix HD. It has given the phone an amazing screen which is usually sported by top phones like the iPhone and the HTC One X. That is not all – the Atrix HD is available at an unbelievably modest price of $100 on-contract from AT&T. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is one of the most hyped about Android phones of the year and has a series of high end features like quad core processor, Super AMOLED screen, impressive camera, 4G LTE and NFC to name a few. Is the Atrix HD capable of stealing some of the S3’s thunder? In today’s article, we are comparing the two smartphones.

Ergonomics & Design:

The Atrix HD measures 133.5 mm lengthwise, 69.9 mm breadthwise and 8.4 mm in thickness. The phone weighs 140 g. The S3 measures 136.6 mm in length, 70.6 mm in breadth and 8.6 mm in thickness. The phone weighs 133 g. The Atrix HD features a 4.5 inch Gorilla Glass topped LCD display. It has a resolution of 1280 * 720 pixels and a density of 331 ppi which makes the text look crisp and the images rich in detail. The S3 has a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen which has resolution of 1280 * 720 pixels and features 16 million colors. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and hence, is scratch proof.

Operating System:

The phones run on Android and the version in both phones is Ice Cream Sandwich (v4.0.4). The Atrix HD has a dual core processor with a clock speed of 1.5 GHz and a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. The S3 is backed by a quad core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz and an Exynox chipset.

Memory:

The Atrix HD has 8 GB of storage with 1 GB RAM. It has a micro SD card slot that can house up to 32 GB. The S3 is available in three models based on internal memory – 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB each available with 1 GB RAM. The S3 has a micro SD slot that can house up to 64 GB.

Camera:

The phones have 8 MP shooters with high resolution and features such as LED flash, geo tagging, image stabilization, etc. The S3 camera has features such as simultaneous HD video and image recording facility also. The phone cameras can shoot 1080p video at a frame rate of 30 fps. The Atrix HD has a 1.3 MP front camera while the S3 owns a 1.9 MP secondary camera that can shoot 720p video.

Connectivity:

The phones are GSM and HSDPA enabled. They also have 4G LTE networks. The LTE connection is provided by AT&T network in the S3. The phones have GPRS and EDGE features. Wi-Fi 802.11, Wi-Fi hotspot facility, etc. enable wireless connectivity. Bluetooth and micro USB v2.0 enable local area connection. The S3 also has a NFC chip.

Battery Life:

The Atrix HD has a Li-Ion battery rated at 1780 mAh. The S3 is fuelled by a Li-Ion standard battery rated at 2100 mAh.

Price:

The Atrix HD is available at $100 on-contract from AT&T. The S3 is available at $199 with 2-year contract, $499.99 with a 1-year contract and $549.99 without a signed commitment.

Wrap Up:

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the obvious winner. It has a larger screen, more internal storage, larger battery capacity, etc. The Atrix HD is a modestly priced handset complete with some high end features. The Atrix HD will make a good sale of course but will not stand in the way of the S3.
